As Governor Stein Plays Politics, House Protects Patients and Funds Medicaid
Raleigh, NC — As of this week, the North Carolina House of Representatives has passed three clean, stand-alone bills to fund the state’s Medicaid rebase and protect patients from Governor Josh Stein’s unnecessary, politically-motivated rate cuts. State health officials confirm that any of the three proposals would lead the administration to drop their cuts.
This repeated effort shows House healthcare leaders are ready to solve Stein's manufactured crisis and won't let procedural roadblocks stand in the way of delivering for North Carolinians.
In September, the House approved Senate Bill 403, which provides $192 million in funding, boosting this year’s total Medicaid rebase investment to $792 million.
Yesterday, representatives passed House Bill 491, appropriating an additional $190 million for the rebase from the Medicaid contingency fund.
The House also approved the Healthcare Investment Act yesterday, a clean version of the Senate’s September Medicaid proposal that removes unrelated capital projects but is otherwise identical to the other chamber's proposal. The bill provides $192 million in total, fully matching Fiscal Research’s estimate, just as the House did with S403.
While Gov. Stein plays politics with people’s healthcare, the House has done its job by funding the state’s Medicaid needs and protecting access to care for families across North Carolina.
