State fisheries officials are opening a public-comment process as they begin reviewing North Carolina’s red drum management plan.

North Carolina fisheries officials are beginning a regulatory review that could shape future management of one of the state’s most prominent coastal species.

State opens public input period for red drum management review

The Division of Marine Fisheries will hold four public meetings as it begins reviewing North Carolina’s Red Drum Fishery Management Plan. The scoping process allows fishermen and other members of the public to identify concerns and suggest management strategies before the state develops proposed plan amendments. Red drum are managed through restrictions including harvest seasons, size limits, creel limits or other conservation measures. The Sept. 10 announcement begins the public-participation stage and does not itself establish new fishing rules.
