Op-ed: Congress Must Protect Consumers' Right to Repair

For generations, North Carolinians have believed that when you buy something, you own it. That simple principle is now under threat as automakers increasingly restrict access to the vehicle data needed to diagnose and repair modern cars and trucks.

Today's vehicles are essentially computers on wheels, generating enormous amounts of information about their operation and maintenance. Unfortunately, many automakers are using that data to limit who can service vehicles, steering consumers toward dealership networks while making it more difficult for independent repair shops and aftermarket manufacturers to compete.

The result is fewer choices, higher costs, and longer wait times for consumers. When independent repair shops cannot access the same diagnostic information as dealerships, North Carolina drivers often pay the price.

This issue extends beyond consumer convenience. North Carolina's automotive sector supports thousands of jobs and contributes billions of dollars to our state's economy. Independent repair facilities, parts suppliers, and manufacturers are critical components of that system. Restricting access to repair data threatens the competitive marketplace that has long benefited consumers and supported local businesses across our state.

That is why Congress should pass the REPAIR Act. This legislation will ensure that vehicle owners and independent repair facilities have access to the tools, software, and maintenance information necessary to repair modern vehicles. It would protect a consumer's right to choose where their vehicle is serviced rather than allowing manufacturers to dictate that choice.

Republicans and Democrats alike support competition, consumer choice, and small business growth.

The REPAIR Act advances all three. It levels the playing field without compromising safety or innovation, while ensuring that independent repair shops can continue serving their communities.

North Carolina consumers deserve the freedom to repair the vehicles they own.

Small businesses deserve a fair opportunity to compete. And our state's manufacturing and automotive workforce deserves policies that encourage competition rather than consolidation.
