Op-Ed: The role charitable organizations play in our local communities
Gilbert Parker of Clayton, NC
As a concerned North Carolinian and President of the North Carolina Faith Fellowship Foundation, based in the Triangle, I care about the role that charitable organizations play in our local communities.
For generations, private philanthropy has played a vital role in upholding the values that define our nation – self-determination, generosity, and a deep sense of community. Across North Carolina, local nonprofits serve on the front lines of urgent needs, providing everything from housing and healthcare to mentorship and meals.
Many nonprofits are small and community-rooted, relying heavily on the support of private foundations to sustain our work. Nonprofits’ ability to thrive depends on a system that encourages giving, not one that burdens it. This is why it is so concerning to see proposals that would increase tax pressure on private foundations, therefore jeopardizing the services we provide and ultimately hurting those in the community who count on us the most.
Thank you, Senator Tillis, for rejecting measures that would make it harder for foundations to fulfill their missions.
