This week at NCDOT: welcome center reopens, litter collection update, historic bridge removal

RALEIGH – The following are highlights from this week at the N.C. Department of Transportation. The stories below are also featured in NCDOT Now, the department's weekly newscast.

Renovations Complete, I-85 Welcome Center Reopens

Travelers coming from Virginia into North Carolina are now greeted with a newly renovated Welcome Center. The Welcome Center on I-85 South in Warren County is back open after closing for several months for renovations. Updates include new floors, lighting and plumbing.

The rest area on I-85 North in Granville County remains closed as updates continue; it’s expected to open by August.

NCDOT operates 58 rest areas along interstate and primary highways and nine Welcome Centers throughout the state.

More than 8 Million Pounds of Litter Collected

NCDOT crews, contractors and volunteers have collected more than 8 million pounds of litter from roadsides this year. At this rate – we are on pace to exceed the record for litter collection, which was 10.5 million pounds, set in 2019.

If you spot someone littering from their vehicle, report them with NCDOT’s Swat-A-Litterbug app

Remember, everyone can help keep North Carolina clean by:

  • Securing their loads before driving;

  • Clearing loose items from truck beds;

  • Waiting to throw trash out of the vehicle until it can be disposed of properly; and

  • Recycling when possible.

We are less than two months away from the next Litter Sweep, NCDOT's biannual statewide litter cleanup initiative. This year's fall sweep runs from Sept. 11-25. To sign up, request supplies and learn more, visit ncdot.gov/littersweep

Historic Hertford S-Bridge Swing Span Removed

The historic Herford ‘S-Bridge’ was removed earlier this month. The bridge has welcomed traffic from land and sea since 1928. A new replacement bridge is expected to open to traffic next spring.
