UNC System examines financial pressure from college athletics
UNC System leaders told the Board of Governors’ budget and finance committee that all 15 system institutions with athletics programs rely on university subsidies and that generated revenue is not keeping pace with spending pressures. System officials said the board was not being asked to approve a policy change, but members discussed potential funding approaches including fees, ticket surcharges, private investment and separately organized entities. The statewide concern is whether escalating athletics costs could draw resources from the academic mission across North Carolina’s public universities. The committee discussion can be verified through the UNC Board of Governors meeting stream.
