North Carolina boards and agencies are preparing for decisions involving election administration, education policy, coastal regulation and community-college governance. Here are four developments to watch.
Elections board to consider appointments, complaint and rule review
The State Board of Elections will meet at 9 a.m. Thursday to consider county election-board vacancies, conduct an evidentiary hearing involving a complaint against a Pitt County board member and receive an update on agency rulemaking. The tentative agenda also includes the periodic review of election rules and a closed session. The public may observe the meeting online, by telephone or at the board’s Raleigh office. Source
DPI receives nearly $4 million to expand alternative student assessments
The N.C. Department of Public Instruction received a $3.99 million federal grant to expand its Skills for the Future initiative over three years. The program evaluates student abilities such as critical thinking, communication, collaboration and adaptability through projects, performance tasks and written reflections. DPI said the funding will extend the program to 6,000 additional students and 250 additional teachers between October 2026 and September 2029. Source
State opens review of proposed Cherry Point training changes
The N.C. Division of Coastal Management is reviewing whether proposed changes to training and operations within the Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point Range Complex comply with enforceable provisions of North Carolina’s Coastal Management Program. The agency will hold a public hearing from 5 to 7 p.m. Sept. 29 at Carteret Community College. Written comments will be accepted through Oct. 15 before the state issues its federal consistency response. Source
State Board of Community Colleges to meet Sept. 17–18
The State Board of Community Colleges is scheduled to meet Thursday and Friday in Raleigh. The meeting provides the governing board an opportunity to act on policies, spending and academic or workforce matters affecting the statewide community-college system. The board’s meeting materials should be reviewed for any final votes or funding decisions that warrant follow-up coverage.
