RALEIGH — North Carolina agencies and lawmakers released several statewide government updates for Wednesday, June 10, including a state environmental lawsuit, a full legislative committee calendar and public comment opportunities on environmental permitting.
State sues Durham chemical company over alleged water contamination
The N.C. Department of Justice and Department of Environmental Quality filed legal action against Brenntag Mid-South, alleging the Durham facility illegally discharged contaminants into state waters. DEQ said the state is asking a court to require the company to stop surface water discharge and submit a cleanup plan within 30 days.
General Assembly committees meet on coastal regulation, elections and E-Verify
The N.C. General Assembly calendar for June 10 lists House and Senate sessions and committee meetings on coastal regulation, election timing, E-Verify, ferry operations, technical corrections and laws governing minors. The Senate is scheduled to convene at 9:30 a.m., and the House is scheduled to convene at 10:30 a.m.
DEQ opens comment period on ATI Specialty Materials air permit
The N.C. Department of Environmental Quality is accepting public comments through July 6 on a draft air quality permit for ATI Specialty Materials’ Bakers Plant in Union County. DEQ said the Monroe facility has applied to expand operations and remove emissions limits that currently classify it as a synthetic minor source.
Marine Fisheries rules now in effect
Eleven new and amended Marine Fisheries Commission rules are now in effect, including rules related to False Albacore management, pot marking requirements, shellfish leases and franchises, and several permit provisions.
