Truth in Taxation bill listed for Senate Finance
Senate Bill 992, titled “Truth in Taxation,” was listed on Thursday’s Senate Finance Committee calendar after being reported favorably and re-referred to Finance on June 16. The bill would require additional steps before a taxing authority could adopt a property tax rate above the revenue-neutral rate in years when a general reappraisal has been conducted, including public notice, a public hearing and majority approval. The bill would apply to budget ordinances adopted for fiscal years after July 1, 2027.
DPS secretary leads rural listening session in Moore County
Department of Public Safety Secretary Jeffrey Smythe joined business leaders, local elected officials, law enforcement representatives and other community leaders Wednesday in Pinehurst for the sixth Rural Listening Session, according to DPS. The session at Sandhills Community College included discussion of jobs, education, health care and public safety, followed by a public comment session for local residents.
Forty-nine Main Street communities receive national accreditation
Forty-nine North Carolina communities received Main Street America accreditation for 2026, the N.C. Department of Commerce announced Monday. The accreditation recognizes local Main Street programs based on performance standards tied to downtown revitalization, preservation-based economic development, leadership, funding, programming and demonstrated results. Commerce said N.C. Main Street programs have leveraged $6.1 billion in public and private investment since 1980.
Blue Ribbon Commission on Public Education to meet Monday
The Blue Ribbon Commission on Public Education is scheduled to meet at 10 a.m. Monday, June 22, at the Friday Institute for Educational Innovation, according to the N.C. General Assembly legislative calendar. The calendar lists a video stream for the meeting.
