John Hood: Workfare still superior to welfare

In Washington, Republican lawmakers are insisting that any deal with the Biden administration to raise the federal debt ceiling be accompanied by stricter work requirements for such programs as cash welfare, nutrition assistance, and Medicaid. In Raleigh, Republican state senators tried to make work requirements a condition for expanding Medicaid under the Affordable Care Act, though the final deal fell short of what they’d hoped.  

Senators Tillis and Marshall Lead Charge Against Biden Administration's Unfair Housing Proposal

U.S. Senators Thom Tillis (R-NC) and Roger Marshall, M.D. (R-KS) led a letter with 16 Republican senators to the Biden Administration’s Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA) Director Sandra Thompson expressing outrage at Thompson’s proposal to penalize Americans who have managed their money responsibly in order to subsidize high-risk borrowers with low credit.   

Ross, Pocan, Cleaver, Sykes Introduce Legislation to End Prison Gerrymandering

Representatives Deborah Ross (NC-02), Mark Pocan (WI-02), Emanuel Cleaver (MO-05), and Emilia Sykes (OH-13) introduced the End Prison Gerrymandering Act. This legislation will help ensure equal representation for all by requiring the Census Bureau to count incarcerated people at their last place of residence rather than the prison in which they are held at the time of the Census.
