Justice Anita Earls on President Trump’s State of the Union Address
Durham, NC – After she attended President Trump’s State of the Union address last night as Congresswoman Deborah Ross’ guest, Justice Anita Earls released the following statement:
“Democracy demands that we show up, even when we don’t agree, to listen and work together toward a common goal: the betterment of we the people. This was at the forefront of my mind as I attended the State of the Union address last night.
In reflecting upon President Trump’s address, it is clear - now more than ever - that our state courts are fundamental in the protection of our constitutional rights and freedoms, especially the right to cast a vote and have it count. Particularly as we see such blatant threats to the separation of powers on the federal level, our state courts must remain a place where the Constitution is upheld and the rule of law is protected.”
Justice Anita Earls is the Senior Associate Justice on the North Carolina Supreme Court.
