Page leads Berger by two votes in Senate District 26 GOP primary

Republican voters in North Carolina Senate District 26 produced a razor-thin result in Tuesday’s primary between Senate President Pro Tempore Phil Berger and Rockingham County Sheriff Sam Page.

Unofficial election night totals showed Page ahead by two votes, a margin that could shift as county boards review provisional ballots and complete the canvass. Because the difference is within the state’s recount threshold, a recount request is expected once results are certified.

The contest drew unusual attention for a state Senate primary, pitting one of the Legislature’s most powerful leaders against a longtime sheriff mounting the most serious challenge Berger has faced in years. The winner will advance to the Nov. 3 general election and is expected to face Democratic nominee Steve Luking.
